Stephen Robert Schmalz, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2024, at the age of 64, surrounded by family after a long battle with Parkinson’s and Lewy Body Dementia. He was born on September 22, 1959 in Rome, New York, attended Daniel Webster College in Nashua, NH, and spent the last 33 years in Hollis, NH. Steve grew up to be the best husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and coach anyone could have asked for—kind, generous, authentic, and always the first to jump in and help anyone who needed it.
Steve dedicated 34 years to a distinguished career as an Air Traffic Controller at ZBW ARTCC in Nashua NH, where his sharp skills and calm demeanor were crucial in ensuring the safety of countless flights. His remarkable contributions were recognized with the prestigious Archie Award from the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, following a heroic act that saved a young pilot's life.
Steve was deeply involved in his community, serving on the Hollis School Board, Elementary School Playground Committee, Booster Club, and Hollis Cal Ripken Baseball, among many others. His hobbies were a reflection of his passion for life; he enjoyed aviation, coaching his sons' sports teams, playing & watching baseball and basketball, woodworking, hiking, biking, kayaking, and most importantly, spending time with his family.
Steve is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Lisa Schmalz; children, Sara Schmalz, Tom Schmalz, Craig and his wife Jen Schmalz and his grandson, Jack Stephen Schmalz. He was a cornerstone of their lives, providing love, strength, and guidance. Steve was predeceased by his mother, Ellie Schmalz , mother-in-law, Trudi Masseur, and father-in-law, Gerard Masseur Sr. He is survived by his father, Robert Schmalz, and siblings Nancy Nicholl, EJ Schmalz, Paul Schmalz, Lisa Blackerby, and Brian Schmalz along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Visiting hours to celebrate Steve's life will be held from 1 - 4pm on Thursday, June 27th at McGaffigan Funeral Home, 37 Main St., (Rte. 113) Pepperell, MA. His life and legacy will be remembered fondly by all who knew him, as a man who lived genuinely and cared deeply for others.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Community Hospice House in Merrimack, NH, the Michael J. Fox Foundation, or simply by taking time and giving back to your community.
