Honorable Army Veteran, Husband, Father, Brother, Uncle and Cousin, Peter lived like he worked, dedicating his life to his wife, daughter, and family. For over 30 years he worked at The Paper Mill in Pepperell, MA, working many hours. When things were slow there, he worked at the Egg Farm in Pepperell. Peter enjoyed fishing, camping, and having a few nips. One thing he never did have was a driver’s license.
Peter was proud of his service to his country as a cook in the Army during Vietnam. He took his daughter every year to Washington, DC to the Vietnam Memorial Wall, as well as to the Vietnam Museum in Texas.
Peter worked with his wife, Alice, on everything from flowers to cooking. The one thing he loved to do was cook. Every Thanksgiving he would make sure everyone was out of HIS kitchen while he had his nips and cooked.
Peter spent the majority of his life in Pepperell and resided in Colebrook, NH for the last 20 years. He was a Life Member of VFW Post 3291 Pepperell, MA and American Legion Post 47, Canaan, VT.
Peter is survived by his wife, Alice (Avery) Durno; daughter Lori Durno; brothers and their family: Phillip Durno, Joe Durno and Timothy Durno; sisters and their family: Mary (Durno) Bond and Kimberly (Toms) Durno; and brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins and their families. Peter was predeceased by newborn son Peter Durno and sister Sheila (Durno) Streeter-Wick.
Visiting hours will be held in the McGaffigan Family Funeral Home, 37 Main St., (Rte. 113) Pepperell, MA on Tuesday, September 26th from 4 – 8 pm. Peter’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Grace worshiping at St. Joseph Church, 28 Tarbell St., Pepperell, MA on Wednesday, September 27th at 10 am. Burial will be held at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Hwy., Boscawen, NH on Thursday, September 28th at 12:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages acts of kindness in Peter’s Memory. Pay it forward, help a stranger, or feed a family with no expectation of receiving anything in return.
