John Michael Hughes, 82, of Pepperell, formerly of Melrose, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on May 19, 2024. Michael was born in Montpelier, VT on February 27, 1942 to the late Harrison Gordon Hughes and Katherine (Kelleher) Hughes.
Michael is survived by his beloved wife of 23 years, Esther Hughes. Michael was the father of Maureen Hughes and partner Christopher Connolly, Michele Hurley and husband Dennis, and the late John Michael Hughes, Jr. He was an amazing stepdad to Gina Ortiz and Robert Ferdinand, Jr. Michael was the grandfather of Teagan and Braeden Hurley, and the much loved “Bankie” to Jonathan, Esterina, Ashton, and Justin Ortiz, and Alivia Ferdinand. He is also survived by his brother, Barry Hughes and his wife Judy, sister, Kathy Frederickson and her husband Roy, and many nieces and nephews. Michael was the beloved “Dog Daddy” of Harry and Buddy.
Michael graduated from Revere High School and went on to attend Boston University, where he studied accounting. He was a veteran of the US Army and was honorably discharged in July of 1970. He was employed as a mortgage officer up until the time of his passing.
As a longtime resident of Melrose, Michael was active in his community as a high school coach and alderman for over 14 years. As a member of the YMCA he co-hosted telethons with Esther.
Michael relocated to Pepperell over 12 years ago. He loved being in nature, gardening, bird watching, but most of all spending time with and being close to his family.
Visiting hours will be held in the McGaffigan Family Funeral Home, 37 Main St., (Rte. 113) Pepperell, MA on Thursday, May 23rd from 9 am – 11:30 am followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Grace Parish worshiping at St. Joseph Church, 28 Tarbell St., Pepperell, MA at 12 noon, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Jimmy Fund (www.jimmyfund.org)
