Gregory E. Stein

Gregory E. Stein (“Steiny”) 71, of Pepperell passed away unexpectedly on January 17, 2023 at Lowell General Hospital.

He was born in Dover, Ohio, a rural area in northeast Ohio. He quickly exhibited an exuberance for life and attacking new experiences. He loved the outdoors and wildlife; camping, hiking, fishing and hunting at every opportunity. He was an entrepreneur at a very early age selling cups of lemonade to his neighbors from his mobile lemonade wagon. His love for the outdoors was a lifelong passion. He graduated from Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio with an associate’s degree in wildlife management. After school he worked for his father and Stein Construction, eventually becoming a union carpenter, and continued working on many jobs in the Boston area after he moved here in the 70’s.

Following Stein tradition, he was a loyal fan of THE Ohio State University, and, of course, he became a fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots.

Greg will be remembered for his quirky sense of humor and warm personality. He loved people and engaged even strangers. He shared with enthusiasm his wealth of knowledge of wildlife, birds, plants and trees with his friends and family. He even had a local raccoon, Punk, come when she was called to receive her reward of a hotdog. She stayed near our home for her lifetime – having 17 babies during that time.

Greg worked as a carpenter and ultimately had his own Stein Construction. His love for the ocean also brought him to Gloucester where he bought a boat, and spent a few years as a lobsterman. It was a really tough job, but he could spend his days on the ocean.

Greg was a lifetime member of the Tewksbury Rod and Gun Club where he shot trap and pistol. He was also a member of the Townsend Rod and Gun Club. He is a former member of the Shriners and the Masons.

He was predeceased by his parents Donald and Carolyn Stein of Mineral City, Ohio, his Uncle Dave Stein of Ohio, his sweet dog Betty Boop, his sweet hedgehog Hannah, and his beloved cat Picklehead. He is survived by his partner, Barbara Pickard, his sons, Alex of Salt Lake City, Utah and Christopher of Rockville, Maryland, his sister, Cheryl Ritenour (Mark) of Mineral City, Ohio, his niece, Elizabeth Milburn (Brent) and her babies, Lincoln and Madelyn of New Philadelphia, Ohio. He is also survived by his aunt Dorothy Stein of New Philadelphia, OH and his uncle Boots Stein of Strasburg, OH, along with many other aunts, uncles and cousins in Ohio. He is also survived by his devoted dog Casey. He will be sorely missed by all.

A Celebration of Greg's Life will be held at Tewksbury Rod and Gun Club, 79 Chandler Street, Tewksbury, MA on Saturday, March 25th from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate in his memory to the animal shelter of your choice or the Shriners.
