Leominster, MA - George R. Brouillette Sr, a longtime resident of Groton, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2025 surrounded by the love of his family. He recently celebrated his 92nd birthday playing cards with family, one of his favorite pastimes. Always a joker, his sense of humor continued until the end.
Born on March 4th, 1933, he was the son of William and Blanche (Vezina) Brouillette. He graduated from Arlington High School in 1951 and Wentworth Institute in 1953. The day after graduation he was drafted into the US Army and proudly served in Korea.
He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ann (Carew), and was happily married for 62 years before her passing in 2018.
George was the commissioner of the Groton Park Department and Recreation Commission for 20 years, providing sports programs for youth and families. He coached Bantam hockey, managed and played in the Over 40 Men’s Ice Hockey League for 35 years into his 80’s, where he was fondly referred to as “Harry Sinden”. In 1968 he established and played in the Public Spirit Men’s Softball League consisting of 8 teams from 5 towns. He was treasurer and flag bearer with the Groton Minutemen. Alongside Mary Ann, he enjoyed square dancing with the Groton Merry Mixers and Acton Square Wheelers. He was the family photographer, and a member of the Colonial Camera Club.
He worked for various companies: General Radio, AO Wilson, Pittsburg Plate Glass, Lawrence Plate Glass, Glass Contractors of Worcester, and Mill City Iron Works, in positions such as draftsman, estimator, detailer, and project manager.
In retirement he shared his love of woodworking and built over 2100 bluebird boxes, hosting feathered friends around Groton and beyond.
He was predeceased by his elder siblings Beatrice A. Hamel, Yvonne M. Gaudet, Robert W. Brouillette, and Lorraine M. Quinn.
Family was his everything of which he was most proud. He is survived by his 6 children; Linda and husband Ed Howes of Springfield, NH, Richard and wife Karen of Greenville, NH, Beverly and husband Ted Gamlin of Auburn, NH, George Jr. and wife Susan of Holliston, MA, Sue and husband Jim Cote of Lunenberg, MA, and Marie and husband John Cohan of Marlborough, MA.
